With five days to go before we left for the USA we finally got into gear and did something about booking places and more importantly applying for our visas. It turns out that because of Bin Laden’s demise the US are only letting tourists in for 3 months and if you want to renew it for longer you must leave the whole of North America, i.e. you can’t just jump into Canada/Mexico/Bahamas and then jump back in (which was our original plan). So we eventually decided that we could still do most of what we wanted to do in 3 months and we would spend a bit more time in Canada on the far side. Justin attached himself to the ipad for the next two days and we sat down at the kitchen table bickering/planning things much to Kelvin’s delight. I think he got a few giggles out of witnessing the backwards and forwards of things while he was trying to do his own work. I love my husband but sometimes he doesn’t make the link between things quite like I do, or perhaps it’s because he thinks out loud and by the time he realises something he has suggested isn’t going to work, I’ve moved on by two cities and resent having to go backwards on the map again. Meanwhile, while I’m explaining why something isn’t going to work he is telling me to “focus Katherine focus”!!!!! From Justin’s point of view I’m probably frustrating him by making him go over things he has already decided (but not told me). Needless to say I needed a wine that night if not something stronger and I’m sure I got some sympathetic looks from Kelv and Cal hahaha!
It took us a long time to find someone who would insure non-American citizens for car use in the States. Some would but then they would only insure us for one state i.e. we would have to re-insure the car every time we crossed the state lines. Eventually we found AIG would accept us across all of America and Canada. We have yet to have a quote from them though as they need to know what make of car etc. So let’s see what the damage is going to be….
We have decided to spend 2 nights in Newark and spend one of the days in NYC, then head out via state parks to Niagara Falls and loop back down again to fly out of JFK to Washington DC and decide what to do from there. We have 2 budgets and plans. 1/ motels and hire cars and 2/buy car and pop up camper (our preference) but if insurance doesn’t work out we may not have a choice.
